The new Bugatti Chiron Sport did not receive more horsepowerMar 7, 2018 8:22 pm • By Pan Eu Jin
Two years after debuting the Chiron at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show, Bugatti has returned this year with a faster version called the Chiron Sport. We’re just going to assume that Bugatti is tired of having all those records beaten by Koenigsegg immediately after setting them.
So as it is a Bugatti, you’re probably assuming that another 1000 hp has been added to the car. In fact, the opposite is true. The Bugatti Chiron Sport still houses the same 8.0-litre W16 quad turbo engine producing 1500 hp and 1600 Nm of torque.
Here’s the catch. Attention instead, has been paid to the handling of the vehicle and its weight. Although, we’re not sure if the Chiron Sport’s new billionaire owners will enjoy the 10% stiffer suspension. A Dynamic Torque Vectoring function has also been added to distribute torque individually to the wheels on each side.
Bugatti had also made this monstrosity of a hypercar lighter, by a full 18 kilograms. It’s a result of using new lightweight wheels, additional carbon fibre components such as the stabiliser, intercooler cover and newly developed windscreen wipers.
Yes, Bugatti is first manufacturer to develop carbon fibre windscreen wipers for the Chiron Sport. The result is a whopping 1.4 kg weight reduction from the original units. Ridiculous? Yes, but so is the existence of this car if you think about it.
The Chiron also features lighter rear windows and a lighter exhaust deflector. These weight reduction efforts has allowed the Chiron Sport to achieve higher cornering speeds and can lap the Nardo Circuit in Italy, a regular proving ground for Bugatti, five seconds faster than the standard Chiron. If you’re wondering what the “16” painted on the radiator grille means, it represents the 16-cylinders in the Chiron’s engine – such is the level of vanity.
