Toyota has introduced minor updates to the popular Alphard and Vellfire duo which adds the second-generation Toyota Safety Sense, cosmetic changes inside and out as well as a new powertrain combo.

Starting from the looks, the update gives both MPVs a more prominent look with new items including restyled headlamps and LED daytime running light graphics, restyled bumpers as well as a new taillamp design. The sportier-looking Aero kit can now be specified on Executive Lounge models (previously only on low and mid-range models), giving it a more distinct look altogether.

Inside, the Alphard and Vellfire Executive Lounge gets updated with Black and White Nappa leather upholstery with white wood grain interior trim. The instrument cluster now features a new design depending on the variant specified. On Wheelcab variants, the tilted seats now get a new tilt mechanism that gives better support to the user, reducing the burden of the assistant.

Powertrain wise, the 2.5-litre 2AR-FE naturally-aspirated four-cylinder, the 2.5-litre 2AR-FXE four-cylinder hybrid along with the CVT gearbox have been retained. Drive is sent to the front wheels on the naturally-aspirated mill while the electrified hybrid sends power to all four corners.

A new 3.5-litre-naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine, codename 2GR-FKS have been added to the line up and is paired to an eight-speed Direct Shift automatic transmission. Toyota has not revealed the official power output for the engine, but they did claim the new powertrain will return 9.4 litres per 100 km.

Last but not least, the second-gen Toyota Safety Sense safety suite has been added as standard fitment on all variants of the Alphard and Vellfire. The advanced driver assist system bundles Pre-Crash Safety, Lane Tracing Assist, Radar Cruise Control, Adaptive High Beam Assist, Road Sign Assist, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Blind Spot Monitor and Traffic Movement Notification.

The Toyota Alphard and Vellfire are available in Malaysia through official distributor UMW Toyota, including the Alphard Executive Lounge. Additionally, the Toyota Harrier will be the first car to be equipped with Toyota Safety Sense in Malaysia and perhaps UMW Toyota is already working on bringing in the refreshed MPVs to our shores.
