The all-new fifth-generation Nissan Serena was unveiled last year and NISMO, Nissan’s official tuning arm has gotten their hands on one of these MPVs and given it their renowned NISMO treatment. Yes, ladies and gents, the Nissan Serena NISMO is real and has just gone on sale in Japan.

NISMO did not just slap on a body kit and called it a day, much has been done to the chassis to give the car a more exhilarating driving experience without compromising on comfort and convenience. At a glance, the Serena NISMO gets custom front grille, new front bumper with air ducts, new rear bumpers with diffuser inserts and even a custom rear spoiler.

Other than the additional NISMO emblems and red stripes another obvious sign that this is no ordinary Serena are those custom 17-inch five twin-spoke NISMO alloys wrapped in 205/50 profile Bridgestone Potenza Adrenalin RE003 high-performance tyres. It also rides on a set of custom suspension tuned for maximum handling performance and long-distance comfort.

If you think the exterior kit is a little over the top for a family MPV, wait till you see the interior. NISMO has fitted the Serena with Alcantara-wrapped steering wheel, RECARO sports front seats, NISMO instrument cluster and red contrast stitching. Fortunately, NISMO has retained all the creature comfort items such as power sliding doors, touchscreen infotainment and air conditioning.

Mechanically, the Serena NISMO retains its 2.0-litre MR20DD four-cylinder twin-CVTC paired to an X-Tronic CVT. Except here, NISMO has retuned the ECU, electric power steering and Vehicle Dynamics Control for punchier acceleration and a more engaging drive. Coupled that with the NISMO sports-tuned muffler, you have a full fledge NISMO model. The company did not reveal its figures but expect the hotter model to better the factory’s 144 hp and 210 Nm of torque.

The Nissan Serena NISMO retains its ProPilot semi-autonomous driving technology and retails for ¥3.4 million (RM126k) in Japan. Locally, the fifth-gen Nissan Serena has yet to make its debut but when the time comes, we have a feeling that Edaran Tan Chong may just offer the NISMO package.
